NEW FARE STRUCTURE AND RATES - EFFECTIVE MARCH 1, 2022
New Fares for Standard, Large, and Extra-Large Vehicles
Effective March 1, 2022, Cross Sound Ferry is implementing a new fare structure to more fairly charge vehicles based on the amount of space they occupy on the ferry. Cars, SUVs, and Pickup Trucks have grown in length, width, and height in recent years. These larger vehicles have negatively impacted the number of vehicles we can carry per crossing, thus reducing our revenue. To offset this impact, we will begin charging different rates for different sized vehicles.
We have developed three categories: Standard Auto, Large Auto, and Extra-Large Auto. We have classified each Make/Model passenger vehicle as Standard Auto, Large Auto, or Extra-Large Auto based on a combination of their dimensions: length, width, and height. Some very low clearance sports cars will also be considered “Large Auto” vehicles because their low clearance restricts the areas they can be parked.
During the reservation process, customers will need to indicate which Make and Model vehicle they will be traveling in. Our system will select the appropriate ticket type: Standard Auto, Large Auto, or Extra-Large Auto. If a customer arrives in a different Make Model vehicle, they may be subject to an upcharge or refund at the terminal.
- For example: Ford Expeditions and Ford Explorers are Large Autos. Ford Escapes and Ford Fusions are Standard Autos.
Any passenger vehicle that is 20 - 23 feet long or more than 7 feet tall and less than 23’ will be considered an Extra-Large Auto, and be subject the Extra-Large Auto fare. All vehicles 20’ – 23’ long and less than 8’6” wide, including small trucks, campers, dual wheeled pickups, etc. will now be recognized as Extra-Large Autos. Some of these vehicles used to be charged by the foot. If a cargo rack or bike rack causes a vehicle to be 20 – 23 feet long or more than 7 feet tall, it will be considered an Extra-Large Auto.
- For example: A Ford F-150 that is less than 20 feet long is a Large Auto. A Ford F-150 that is 22 feet long is an Extra-Large Auto.
Standard Auto, Large Auto, and Extra-Large Auto tickets will have a Base fare for Off-Peak Departures, and a Full Fare for Peak departures and for tickets sold at the Terminal. All three categories are eligible for Priority fares and Rewards Discount Fares (Reservations Required).
Vehicles that are more than 23 feet long will be considered Commercial Vehicles and charged for their overall length at the applicable per-foot rate. Cars towing trailers will be charged for the overall length of the car and trailer together, at the applicable per-foot rate. Cars w/ trailers used to be charged for a car/driver ticket plus the trailer length. Effective March 1st, cars w/ trailers will be charged for the overall length of the Car & Trailer.
Rewards Customers that have their usual make and model vehicle associated with their account may have to update that make model with our new database after March 1, 2022.
New Fare Structure for Commercial Vehicles
Effective March 1, 2022, “Commercial Vehicles” will follow the same PEAK and OFF-PEAK fare structure as Autos. We are replacing the “Commercial Vehicle” Monday – Thursday per-foot rate and Friday – Sunday per-foot rate with a Base (OFF-PEAK) rate and a Full (PEAK) rate.
For “Commercial Vehicle” reservations, the applicable per-foot rate will be determined by the departure designation, PEAK or OFF-PEAK.
Tickets sold at the terminal (no reservation) will always subject to the higher Full fare, so reservations are highly recommended.
All customers who book reservations on an OFF-PEAK departure at the Base fare, but arrive late to the terminal and don’t get on their reserved departure, will be subject to an upcharge to the higher Full fare. This is consistent with the rules for Autos.
New Special Truck Tickets
Some Commercial Vehicles will be charged higher rates due to their size and/or characteristics. Low Boy vehicles require special considerations and may cause risks to our operation and will be charged a higher per-foot rate. Wide Load vehicles (greater that 8’ 6” wide) require more space onboard the ferry and will continue to be charged a higher per-foot rate. Very long vehicles (greater than 90’ or greater than 100’) will continue to be charged a higher per-foot rate.
Just like all other vehicle tickets, these Special Truck Tickets will have Base and Full per-foot rates, based on PEAK and OFF-PEAK Departures.
