Cross Sound Ferry launched the high-speed ferry era on Long Island with its acquisition of the Sea Jet I in 1995. The 400 passenger vessel has cut the travel time between New London and Orient Point in half as it makes the 16 mile crossing in just 40 minutes. The Sea Jet I is capable of cruising at speeds in excess of 30 knots (35 mph), and its patented Wave Piercing Catamaran design, along with a Maritime Dynamics ride control system, ensures a high level of passenger comfort in all sea conditions. The Sea Jet's airline-style seating and passenger amenities make the trip not only quick but comfortable. The vessel was built by Nichols Brothers Shipyard in the state of Washington. The vessel's eight television screens on both the main interior cabin and upper level cabin are programmed for satellite television viewing. The old paint scheme on the vessel represented the flag of Hawaii, where the vessel once served as part of an inter-island commuter service and dinner cruise boat. Prior to operating in Hawaii, the Sea Jet ran between Boston and Nantucket Island. After its stint in Hawaii, the vessel operated between San Diego, Dana Point, and Catalina Island, California.  The vessel has since been painted with the new scheme as shown above.
